NEWCASTLE rockers Silverchair are about to return to the main stage of the Big Day Out.

The festival begins on the Gold Coast on Sunday.

Silverchair haven't played the festival for six years.

It's been an eventful six months for frontman Daniel Johns, who recently announced his divorce from Natalie Imbruglia and only had a short break from performing over Christmas.

Silverchair's album Young Modern won five categories at the ARIA awards in October, making the group the most successful ARIA winners of all time.

The trio also toured in Australia and the US during this period, finishing up in Minnesota, in the US, on December 16.

The band's latest single, Mind Reader, is now on radio.
