NEWCASTLE rockers Silverchair will be a dominant presence at the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards this year.

Besides performing at the October 28 event in Sydney, the trio have received four ARIA nominations for their fifth studio album Young Modern.

After a lengthy absence from the studio, the lads received nominations in the categories of best rock album, best group, album of the year and single of the year.

In March, Silverchair scored their first number one on the Australian singles charts in more than a decade with the release of Straight Lines.

However, it was dance act Sneaky Sound System that swept the ARIA nominations yesterday, getting a nod in six categories including best group.

The Sydney group's self-titled album has also been nominated for best dance album, best independent release and album of the year.

Roots group John Butler Trio scored the second highest number of nominations, with five, including album of the year and best independent release.

Joining them in the battle for album of the year are Powderfinger, Silverchair and Gotye.

Nominated in the best male artist category are Dan Kelly, Gotye, John Butler, Josh Pyke and Paul Kelly.

And for best female artist, Central Coast lass Kasey Chambers, Kate Miller-Heidke, Katie Noonan, Missy Higgins and Sarah Blasko are in contention.
