THE year was 1987. The world had punk rockers The Ramones, but only Newcastle could lay claim to The Marones.

The Newcastle tribute band is now preparing to celebrate their 20th anniversary with a gig at The Lucky Country Hotel this Saturday.

Founding member Paul Harris, aka Harry Marone, said members of the band remained better friends than their US counterparts.

"And we're mostly still alive, thankfully," he said.

"I think we're philosophically very close to the Ramones in their ideals and their attitudes and that sort of thing."

Their set will power through tracks from every era of The Ramones, including some tracks new to The Marones.

"Joey Ramone did his version of What a Wonderful World, so I guess you could say that was the last Ramones symbol so we've learnt that one for the occasion."

Some light re-Leith

IF you plan to be one of those who will rush out and grab your own shiny copy of Damien Leith's new album this Saturday, brace yourself: the good man is touring.

Leith will perform songs from his album Where We Land at Newcastle's Civic Theatre on November 16.

Tickets are available through Ticketek on 4929 1977.
